cold mountain
"And, as with most things, Monroe had an explanation. He said that in their hearts people feel that long ago God was everywhere all the time; the sense of loneliness is what fills the vacuum whe He pulls back one degree more remote."
mistress of keys
"A time ago, there lived a mistress of keys. She had not always possessed such a fancy title, but had once been a woodcutter's daughter. This woodcutter, newly widowed with the birth of his daughter, was an educated man and, when the girl was born, had great plans for his daughter. He believed that there were many doors of opportunity waiting to be opened by his daughter. However, her father was suddenly struck dead and the young girl was drained of spirit and soon became destitute. Fortunately, she came upon a week old newspaper one day while contemplating her lonely life. She glanced over it denying herself hope in the complicated and sophisticated jobs descriptions, which she thought were meant for complicated and sophisticated peoples. She was about to cast the paper aside when she say in bold, capitalized letters: MASTER OF KEYS WANTED. She thought about that title for a while and thought that it was such a silly title for such a simple job. She was however curious and soon begged a yellow, but clean piece of paper and pencil stub from a nearby notary. With these newfound treasures, she began to write:
'Dear Mr. ----
I am inquiring about the position of master of keys posted in the newspaper. If you have not found one for the job, I will offer my assistance as mistress of keys.
Signed, Clara'
After she had written the letter, she shivered and shook all over. As she thought more and more about the letter she had written and sent off, she grew more and more desperate to become the mistress of keys. She was perhaps desperate in her sad state, however, she was rather looking forward to the glimmer of keys and the control over the opening and locking of many a hidden thing, rather than her salary.
Anyone watching the road outside of the post office would have seen a small, thin girl skipping happily away from the road, although she seemed in the most worst state of being."
